What is Hologram Lamination Technology?
Hologram lamination technology is the process of permanently bonding a holographic film (embossed and metalized) onto a substrate – such as paper, cardboard, plastic sheet, or even metal – using heat, pressure, or adhesives (or a combination). Unlike self‑adhesive hologram labels (which have a release liner and are applied individually), hologram lamination covers large areas continuously, making it ideal for full‑surface security, premium packaging, and document protection. The laminated holographic film becomes an integral part of the product or document, providing overt authentication (rainbow colours, 3D depth, kinetic effects) and tamper evidence (the film cannot be removed without visible damage). Hologram lamination is widely used for pharmaceutical cartons, luxury boxes, passport data pages, ID cards, certificates, and high‑value brand packaging. Holoseal supplies holographic lamination films in various thicknesses, widths, and patterns, and we work with converters and security printers to achieve optimal bond strength and visual effect.
🔬 How Hologram Lamination Technology Works
The process varies depending on the substrate and the type of laminating machine. Below are the most common methods:
1. Thermal Lamination (Heat‑Seal)
The holographic film comes with a heat‑activated adhesive coating. The film and substrate are passed between heated rollers (typically 80–120 °C). The heat melts the adhesive, and pressure bonds the film permanently. This is the most common method for paper and cardboard packaging.
2. Cold Lamination (Pressure‑Sensitive)
The holographic film has a pressure‑sensitive adhesive (PSA) and is applied at room temperature using rollers. No heat is required, making it suitable for heat‑sensitive substrates (e.g., thin plastic films, certain inks).
3. Wet Lamination (Adhesive‑Based)
A liquid adhesive (water‑based or solvent‑based) is applied to the substrate, then the holographic film is pressed onto it. The adhesive is dried in an oven or by air. Provides a very strong bond but slower than thermal lamination.
4. UV Lamination
A UV‑curable adhesive is applied, the holographic film is laminated, and then UV light instantly cures (hardens) the adhesive. High‑speed, used in some packaging lines.
📦 Types of Holographic Lamination Films
- Rainbow holographic lamination film – Classic full‑surface rainbow pattern. Used for gift boxes, cosmetics, and promotional packaging.
- 2D/3D holographic lamination film – Multi‑layer depth effect for premium packaging (e.g., whisky cartons, perfume boxes).
- Transparent (clear) holographic lamination – The hologram is made with a high‑refractive‑index coating (not metal). The film is clear, allowing underlying print to show while adding a diffractive effect. Used on passport data pages and luxury labels.
- Demetalized holographic lamination – Partial metal removal creates clear windows or text within the hologram. Adds a high‑security feature.
- DOVID (kinematic) lamination film – Advanced animated effects (rolling bar, image switching) for banknotes and high‑security documents.
🛡️ Security Advantages of Hologram Lamination
- Tamper evidence – Removing the laminated hologram damages the substrate (tears paper or leaves adhesive residue).
- Copy resistance – The diffractive effect cannot be reproduced by scanners or colour copiers.
- Integrity of printed data – The lamination protects the underlying print from alteration (e.g., changing a date or signature).
- Machine‑readable options – Some laminates include IR‑readable features for automated verification.
- Large‑area security – Unlike a small label, lamination covers the entire surface, making it much harder to replace or tamper with.
⚙️ Applications of Hologram Lamination Technology
- Pharmaceutical cartons – Full‑face holographic lamination over the box to prevent counterfeiting and show tampering.
- Luxury packaging (perfume, jewellery, spirits) – Adds a premium, eye‑catching finish while providing authentication.
- Passport data pages – Transparent holographic laminate protects the printed personal information and photo.
- ID cards & driver’s licences – Holographic laminates over PVC or polycarbonate cards prevent forgery.
- Certificates & diplomas – Lamination with a holographic overlay makes it difficult to alter or counterfeit.
- Brand protection labels (large format) – For products where a small label is insufficient, full‑surface lamination provides comprehensive security.
🔐 Integration with Security Printing
Hologram lamination is often combined with other security printing techniques:
- Intaglio printing – Raised ink printed on the substrate before lamination.
- Offset printing – Fine guilloche patterns and microtext are printed under the clear laminate.
- Serialisation – Variable data (serial numbers, QR codes) can be printed on the substrate before lamination or laser‑engraved through the laminate.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About Hologram Lamination Technology
- Can hologram lamination be applied to curved surfaces? – Standard lamination is best for flat substrates. For curved objects (bottles, jars), we recommend hot stamping foils or self‑adhesive labels instead of full lamination.
- Is holographic lamination waterproof? – Yes – the PET film itself is waterproof. The lamination adhesive, when properly applied, also resists moisture. This makes it ideal for beverage cartons and outdoor packaging.
- Will the holographic effect fade over time? – The diffractive effect is embossed into the film and does not fade. However, the metal layer (aluminium) may oxidise if exposed to harsh chemicals or extreme humidity. A clear protective top coat prevents this.
- Can I print on top of a holographic laminate? – Yes – some holographic films have a primer coat that accepts flexo, offset, or digital printing. We offer printable grades for overprinting variable data (batch numbers, barcodes).
- What is the minimum order quantity for custom holographic lamination film? – For a custom pattern (e.g., your logo repeated across the film), master origination applies, with minimum order of 10,000 square metres (approximately). For stock rainbow patterns, smaller quantities (e.g., 500 metres) are available.
- How to order hologram lamination film from Holoseal? – Provide your desired pattern (stock or custom), roll width, thickness, lamination type (thermal, wet, cold), and quantity. We will send samples for testing on your laminating machine. Contact us for a quote.
