What is a 3D Hologram?
A 3D hologram is an embossed hologram that displays a true three‑dimensional image with continuous depth, parallax, and perspective change. Unlike a 2D hologram (flat rainbow) or a 2D/3D hologram (a few flat layers), a genuine 3D hologram is recorded from a real three‑dimensional object or a computer‑generated 3D model. When you tilt the hologram, different parts of the image reveal themselves – you can see around the object, and the spatial relationships between foreground and background shift realistically. This level of depth makes 3D holograms much harder to counterfeit than flat holograms, and they are widely used on banknotes, passports, high‑value product packaging, and official documents.
At Holoseal – a trusted hologram supplier with 15+ years of experience – we supply 3D hologram labels, strips, and patches for clients requiring the highest level of depth‑based security. Our 3D holograms are used across India and worldwide by governments, central banks, and premium brands.
🔍 Characteristics of a True 3D Hologram
- Continuous depth – The image shows smooth variation in depth, not just a few flat layers.
- Parallax – When you move your head side‑to‑side or up‑down, the relative position of objects shifts realistically – you can see “around” the foreground object.
- Perspective change – Hidden parts of the object become visible as you tilt the hologram.
- Rainbow or true colour – Most mass‑produced 3D holograms are rainbow (due to embossing), but true‑colour 3D holograms exist in niche applications.
- High security – Extremely difficult to counterfeit because the depth information requires complex master origination.
⚙️ How is a True 3D Hologram Made?
There are two main methods to create a 3D hologram master:
Method 1: Optical Recording from a Real Object
A real 3D object (e.g., a sculpture, a product, or a model) is placed on an optical table. A laser beam is split into object and reference beams. The object beam illuminates the object, and the scattered light interferes with the reference beam on a photoresist plate. The resulting interference pattern contains continuous depth information. This is the classic “true” 3D hologram, but it requires the physical object to be present and is rare in mass production due to size limitations.
Method 2: Computer‑Generated 3D Hologram (CGH)
Most modern security 3D holograms are created from 3D computer models. Software calculates the interference pattern from a digital 3D model (e.g., a logo extruded in 3D, a product rendering, or a geometric shape). The calculated pattern is written onto a photoresist plate using a laser writer or electron beam. This method gives perfect control over depth, perspective, and can combine 3D with other effects (text, kinetic movement).
After master creation, the process follows standard electroforming, shim production, and embossing.
🆚 3D vs. 2D vs. 2D/3D vs. Dot Matrix
- 2D – Completely flat, no depth. Lowest cost. Used for promotional stickers and basic seals.
- 2D/3D – Several discrete flat layers at different depths (e.g., foreground logo, mid‑ground pattern, background text). Gives illusion of depth but no continuous parallax.
- True 3D – Continuous depth, realistic parallax. High cost, high security. Used on currency, passports, high‑value products.
- Dot matrix – Can produce 3D effects but via pixelated gratings; often used for animations rather than photorealistic 3D.
💼 Applications of True 3D Holograms
Because of their authenticity and difficulty to counterfeit, 3D holograms are reserved for the highest‑security applications:
- 💵 Banknotes & Currency – Many modern banknotes (e.g., Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, Indian ₹500) incorporate a 3D holographic stripe or patch with a shifting depth effect.
- 🛂 Passports & e‑Passports – The data page often includes a 3D hologram of the passport holder’s photo (or a national emblem) that changes perspective and shows hidden text.
- 🆔 National ID Cards & Visas – High‑security government IDs use 3D holographic overlays to prevent photo substitution.
- 💊 Premium Pharmaceuticals – Anti‑counterfeit labels on high‑cost medicines (cancer drugs, vaccines) where fakes pose a health risk.
- 🍾 Luxury Spirits, Watches, and Designer Goods – Brands protecting products worth thousands of dollars per item use 3D holograms for authentication.
- 📜 Degree Certificates & Legal Documents – University degrees and land titles include 3D holographic seals to prevent forgery.
🔐 Security Value of True 3D Holograms
The continuous depth and parallax make 3D holograms exceptionally secure:
- Human verifiable – Anyone can tilt the label and instantly see realistic depth – counterfeit flat stickers cannot replicate this.
- Master origination complexity – Creating a true 3D master requires a 3D model or physical object, expensive laser recording, and precise photoresist processing – far beyond counterfeiters’ capabilities.
- Difficult to simulate – At best, counterfeiters can produce a 2D or 2D/3D imitation that lacks continuous parallax. Even under a magnifier, the difference is obvious to trained inspectors.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About 3D Holograms
Are all holograms with a 3D effect true 3D?
No. Many “3D holograms” on the market are actually 2D/3D – they have a few flat layers spaced apart. True 3D has continuous depth and realistic parallax. Holoseal can help you distinguish and choose based on your security needs.
Is a 3D hologram more expensive than a 2D hologram?
Yes, significantly. Master origination for true 3D can cost 3–5 times more than 2D/3D and 10–15 times more than simple 2D. However, the per‑label cost in high volumes is still modest (a few cents to a few rupees) because embossing is the same.
Can I get a 3D hologram of a real product (e.g., my mobile phone)?
Yes – we can arrange optical recording of a physical object. However, the object must fit on the optical table (typically <30 cm in size), and the process is more expensive than CGI. For most brand logos, we recommend computer‑generated 3D from a 3D model.
Do 3D holograms work with white light?
Yes – embossed 3D holograms are designed to be viewed in white light (sunlight or indoor lighting). The diffraction gratings produce rainbow colours, but the depth perception is still clear.
Can 3D holograms be combined with other security features?
Absolutely. We can include microtext, UV/IR features, serial numbers, QR codes, and tamper‑evident adhesives on a true 3D hologram.
How to order a true 3D hologram from Holoseal?
Provide a 3D model (STL, OBJ, STEP) or a detailed description of the object. If you need a physical object recorded, we can arrange that. We then handle origination, shim production, embossing, and finishing. Contact us for a quote.
